About Libby

I was once where you are now - scared and stuck. So scared to fly that every time I did, I felt like I was walking a gangplank to my probable death as I descended the ramp onto a plane. Once on board, every noise and bump felt like it was amplified in my nervous system by a factor of 100.
I was also so stuck in a cycle of paralyzing fear that I missed out time and again on adventures and opportunities that involved traveling by plane. When I occasionally did summon enough willpower to book a trip, I ended up suffering weeks or months of anticipatory dread just waiting to go.
It was exhausting. There had to be a better way.
In 2002, I saw a very small ad in my local paper's travel section. It simply said: "Afraid to fly?" with a phone number. I thought: maybe, just maybe, someone could help.
Long story short: I took a class with a couple of instructors over two weekends near Boeing Field in Seattle (one of which involved a short flight on a commercial airline to Spokane, WA and back), met a group of about 20 others who shared my fear and who were clearly "my people" and started my climb out of the misery that was my fear of flying.
But here's the interesting part: while the class itself was of tremendous help, it wasn't the main reason my fear of flying diminished over the months and years that followed. The main reason: the connections I made with fellow students in that class. Yes, the other fearful fliers. You see, we ended up coaching each other before, during, and after our flights and through all our fears.
We didn't formally call it coaching. But that's what it was: we were
-
listening deeply to each other without judgement,
-
recognizing thoughts and feelings keeping us stuck (as well as the ones propelling us forward),
-
encouraging progress toward our goals, reminding each other of mental tools we could utilize
-
processing challenges together
-
celebrating the sweet wins (thinking about flying without feeling nauseous, booking a trip without regret, flying the first leg of a dream trip, finally not gripping the armrest so tightly on takeoff or actually enjoying some music during turbulence).
Coaching for fear of flying changed my life.
And it can change your life too... I've got you.
